Dodgy: Ossoff Declines Debate Invite by CNN
Democratic candidate for Georgia’s 6th district, Jon Ossoff, has declined to participate in a nationally televised debate against Republican opponent Karen Handel, according to the Washington Examiner. The debate, which was proposed by CNN and the Atlanta Press Club, was to be televised to a national audience on June 13th. With this latest declination by the Ossoff campaign there remains scheduled only two debates between the two candidates.
Ossoff’s evasive maneuvering comes as the race for Georgia’s 6th district grows increasingly prominent in national politics. The special election runoff, which many Democrats are promoting as a referendum on the policies of the Trump administration, will be the third of its kind since the Republican victory in the 2016 general election. The previous two congressional special elections, Montana at-large district and Kansas 4th district, resulted in decisive wins for Republicans. Democrats, however, are convinced they can flip Georgia’s 6th district, as is evident by the record-breaking donation amounts. Before the April 18th primary election, the Ossoff campaign raked in roughly $11 million in donations, 95% of which came from outside the state of Georgia.
